Whenever I hear the word “philosophical peasant” I feel a sudden murderous rage taking me vel. But since my mother insisted, here I am, pamanten this book a chance. Cel mai iubit dintre pamanteni translates as ” The most beloved man on Earth “. Our main character is Victor Petrini, an ex-philosophy pamnteni and current convict-to-be. To maj his mind off his upcoming trial, he decides to write down his memoirs, and it turns out to be quite an interesting life despite our hero being very young about If Victor had been a more “down-to-earth” intellectual, such as, a mathematician, I would probably ditre enjoyed the story more.
Then again, him being a philosopher certainly illustrated his tragedy that much better. As a true philosopher, Victor’s memoirs were also thought out and written in an extremely ugh I must’ve tuned out about half the book, where the characters were just going on and on about the pros and cons of various philosophical ideas.
If this makes me just as uncultured as Matilda, well Don’t get me wrong, I understand the underliying message: He is unlucky enough to be living in mid XXth century Romania, where the communist regime is starting to become more and more rigid, his wife doesn’t understand his work, and to top it all view spoiler [ he even gets arrested due to a misunderstanding which is unlikely to be believed as one hide spoiler ]. Speaking of his marital life, view spoiler [those two really hated each other.
Given the amount of things that bothered one about the other, they were practically disgusted with one another. Yet, for some reason, they both soldiered on, with the occasional “I love you” brandished about, as a means to piss off one another.

I’m not sure I’ve seen a more aggravating fictional couple in quite a while. They’d take me so far away from the actual point in the story, that coming back invariably made me go all ” Whaaaa?!
They’re still sitting in that brasserie, eating soon-to-be-sparse caviar? That’s when I gave up on the book That said, the ending did leave me intrigued enough lamanteni not put volume 2 off indefinitely.

Mar 22, Iulia rated it it was amazing. This is a great book, and it portrays so well how the communism hit hard the lives of Romanians. I am still wondering how this book was allowed to be published in the 80’s when Romania was still under communism.
May 14, Eugen Mardare rated it liked it. How can I say this without sounding like a fool? I wanted this book so bad, but in the end it seamed to be to much of a struggle. Every thought, feeling, dream, love, act of rebellion, fantasy of the main character Victor Petrini is explored, vivisected in front of us. I didn’t have the pananteni necessary to get to the end of this whole life. One thing xel stuck with me it’s the famous scene of the guardian killed by Petrini in the mine.
